Iowa Children's Choice Winner

The winning book this year was Escaping the Giant Wave, by Peg Kehret, a fiction book about a tsunami hitting the coast of Oregon.

Usborne Book Fair

The Media Center is sponsoring an Usborne Book Fair Tuesday Feb. 14 - Thursday Feb. 16 in the media center, open before and after school, and during Grandparents Day. We get free books equaling half our total sales amount, so come on out, get some great books, and support our school library!

Iowa Children's Choice Award

The votes are in, and the winning book for our school is The Ghost Sitter, by Peni R. Griffin. Students had to read at least seven of the 20 nominees to vote. Our school votes have been forwarded to the Iowa Children's Choice Award committee, and the state winner will be announced in a few months.

Battle of the Books

Congratulations to our winning school champions: Alex Cole, Walker Hingtgen, and Tyler Kull! They'll compete against the other North Scott elementary teams at the Scott County Library in Eldridge on Saturday, March 4.

In Battle of the Books teams of three students compete by answering questions on the 20 Iowa Children's Choice Award nominees. Correct answers require naming the title of the book referred to, and its author.

Students have begun reading the 20 books nominated this year for the Iowa Children's Choice Award. 3rd through 6th graders can vote in February for the best book IF they have read at least 7 of them by then. See Mr. Fritz to sign up. Come on, everyone, this isn't hard! Just read one book a week in November, December, and January and you'll have read 12 of them!

Low Turnout!

Due to extremely low turnout, we have to cancel further meetings of the Comic Book Club and the Webzine. Its hard to get kids to voluntarily stay after school! Maybe we could try again over the summer break?

Writers Wanted!

The first meeting of our student webzine will be Thursday, Oct. 6 after school, and we'll meet every Thursday after that. Practice your writing skills by writing news articles about school events! Then learn how to turn your story into a web page. Open to students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. See Mr. Fritz for the parent consent form.

Book Fair Results

Thanks everyone,

Total sales this year were $2,415 (last year $2,409), which includes $129.00 donated through One for Books. (28 books were donated to classrooms from teacher wish lists.)

The One for Books money was used to buy 10 hardcover books from the Fair for the library.

Profits generated around $450 in cash, which will be dedicated for library books, plus 24 addtional (mostly paperback) library books worth $120.00 from the fair, plus around $180 in vouchers for book purchases from the Scholastic catalog.

So when the books are all ordered the Book Fair generated about 62 new library books worth approximately $750.00!

One for Books

Thanks to the students, staff, and parents of Neil Armstrong for supporting the One for Books campaign. We've raised over $100 so far to buy additional library books!

Our Book Fair is going strong with over $1,200.00 in sales through Friday Sept. 16. The fair is open until Wed. Sept. 21 so come on out and support your library!

Scholastic Book Fair

Our main library fundraiser is the Scholastic Book Fair, coming Wed. September 14 through Wed. September 21. The more we sell, the more money and books we get for the school library.

Due to construction, we don't have a permanent place for the book fair, but we hope to be open during parent conferences in the gym, and maybe in the hallway by our mini-library on other days.

A new feature this year is "One for Books" - we're asking everyone to give a $1 donation to buy more books for the library, and Scholastic will match that with a donation to charities that give books to kids who need them. Ask your relatives, neighbors, friends to help the Neil Armstrong Library with a $1 donation!!

Mini-Library almost ready

Our temporary Mini-Library, located in the former 4th grade coatroom, is almost ready. The books are on the shelves, but we are waiting for district personnel to connect our computer to the school network, which we must have in order to check out books. We hope to be ready for students to check out books by Tuesday August 23.

Spiderman - Batman - Justice League - Powerpuff Girls - Archie - Donald Duck - Looney Tunes - Star Wars - Simpsons

Join the Comic Book Club to read all your favorite comic books. Meetings will be after school. Cost is 25 cents for each meeting (money used to buy more comic books). Look for the bulletin board display at school in August. (We don't know what days we'll be meeting yet - stay tuned!)

Back To School

School starts up again Wed. Aug. 17. Will we have a library? No one knows. Certainly a lot of people have been working on the remodeling project at Armstrong this summer. We hope the former 4th grade coatroom will be finished and can be used for a mini-library until remodeling is complete. If its not ready in August, however, we'll have to make other arrangements!

Mr. Fritz will be sharing the music room (alternating days with Mrs. Jorgenson) for his scheduled library and computer classes, until construction is complete.
